LYLAH'S ARANGETRAM
WHAT IS AN ARANGETRAM?
The word “Arangetram” comes from Tamil and translates to “ascending the stage.” In the world of Bharatanatyam, it refers to the first full-length solo debut performance of a dancer. The Arangetram marks the completion of a dancer’s formal education under a Guru (teacher) and signifies their entry into more advanced level performance and training. It is a showcase of the dancer’s skills and the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.
The Arangetram begins with a traditional invocation to the gods and goddesses, followed by a series of dance pieces that display the dancer’s skills and mastery of the Bharatanatyam style. These pieces often include classical Indian stories brought to life through dance, as well as timeless themes of love, joy, and bravery.
Throughout the performance, accompanied by a live orchestra, the dancer displays various techniques, including facial expressions, hand gestures, rhythmic footwork, and body movements. The dancer’s ability to express emotion, convey stories, and captivate the audience with grace and beauty are on full display during the Arangetram.
